Prescription Medication Error Leads to Death

February 17, 2012

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Walgreens and one of their pharmacist for a prescription medication error that lead to a woman's wrongful death. The family of Mary Moore filed the wrongful death lawsuit after her death in November 2010. Moore gave the local Walgreens a prescription for her high blood pressure medicine, Hydralazine, but received an antihistamine, Hydroxyzine, instead.

Moore had a history of high blood pressure and was previously hospitalized for this condition along with congestive heart failure and kidney failure. The personal injury attorney representing Moore's estate stated Hydroxyzine is a "high risk medication for the elderly that can cause over sedation and confusion. According to the wrongful death lawsuit, Moore was not given counseling on the medication, which would have allowed the pharmacist to notice the prescription medication error.

Moore's high blood pressure was untreated for two weeks before the pharmacist noticed the error. The personal injury lawsuit alleges it was too late and therefore Moore was hospitalized and subsequently died.

The lawsuit is seeking a jury trial as well as compensatory and punitive damages.
